PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN PORTLAOISE EDUCATE TOGETHER National School
Physical Education in school is hugely important in a child’s development physically, mentally and socially.
In PETNS all classes are taught 6 different strands each year. They are Games, Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Aquatics and Outdoor and Adventure.
In Portlaoise Educate Together NS we aim to include a variety of different sports and activities during the year in the PE curriculum. We have initiatives such as ‘Active Breaks’ in the classroom, especially on rainy days.
Our Cumann na mBunscol teams are the focal point of GAA in our school. We enter teams in Boys’ and Girls’ Football, Hurling, Camogie and Rounders.
Football takes place in the first term from September until the mid-term break.
Hurling and Camogie begins in March, finishing around the June Bank Holiday Weekend. Children from 4th, 5th and 6th represent these teams.
We play the Rounders competition in June.
Our Boys Football team has enjoyed great success in recent years with 4 consecutive visits to O’Moore Park on Finals Day!
Our Girls Football team are also improving year on year.’
We are very lucky to have two excellent GAA coaches working in our school. Shane Keegan from Portlaoise GAA works with the younger classes in our school. He is ably aided by our trainee coaches in 6th Class.
Paddy Knowles from Park Ratheniska GAA works with 2nd and 3rd class. We here at PETNS always encourage children who want to improve their skills to join a club.
TAG Rugby – Portlaoise RFC and Leinster Rugby offer tag rugby sessions in our school. These usually take place in the senior end of the school and run in 6 week blocks. We also take part in rugby blitzes in Portlaoise Rugby Club at various times throughout the year.
Soccer – Our school regularly takes part in the SPAR Primary 5-a-side competitions.
Other Sports – During the 3rd term every year we participate in a variety of sports including athletics, cross country running and basketball.
