About the programme

Our school is running a Parental Involvement Programme which aims to improve learning for all children through increased parental involvement in the daily life of the school. It is hoped that the vast skills and interests of our parent body will be drawn upon to support teachers with the delivery of the curriculum.

Parental involvement is central to the ethos of all Educate Together Schools including PETNS. Parental involvement is extremely important because research has shown that parental interest and attitudes to school, to books and to education are the most important influences on a child’s learning.

We are very fortunate to have dedicated parents who have generously given up their time and skills on countless occasions to date. This has been of enormous benefit to all children and has been greatly appreciated by staff. With the introduction of our parental involvement programme, we hope that even more parents will share their time and skills.

In the coming weeks we will be compiling a list of parents who express an interest in becoming involved in various aspects of school life. This information will only be accessible to teachers, and the school’s Board of Management. Your information will not be shared with anyone outside the school. Parents will be contacted throughout the year as opportunities arise in areas that they are interested in. Parents may be asked to assist in their own child’s class or other classes in the school. Please note that parent volunteers will be asked to complete a Garda vetting form and to sign a confidentiality agreement, which asks that they do not discuss sensitive information relating to the children with anyone outside the school.

Examples of areas that we would appreciate parental assistance with include helping class teachers with the delivery of the play based curriculum in the infant classes, group and project work in all classes, delivering after-school clubs for children from 1st -6th class, and helping with one off events such as art projects or the school sports’ day. Parent volunteers will not be left in a position where they are delivering an activity without a teacher who will remain responsible for the children at all times.

If you would like to become involved in our Parental Involvement Programme, please fill out the form that was sent home in September and return it to the school office or your child’s class teacher. Each parent/ guardian who would like to become involved should complete a separate form. Additional forms are available from the school office or it can be completed online. To locate the form on the school’s website scroll over the ‘parental involvement’ tab on the main page of the website, then scroll over the ‘parental involvement programme’ option from from the drop-down menu, and choose ‘ Get involved! Parental involvement online interest form’.

If you have any queries or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact parentalinvolvement@petns.ie call into the office to make an appointment to speak with Kay Morrissey, this year’s programme coordinator. Additionally you can find information on the school’s Parental Involvement Programme notice board which is located in the school foyer.

We look forward to working more closely with you in the coming weeks and welcome all involvement no matter how great or small.
